As We Leave New Orleans

no house 4

By what strange neglect
are the freezer’s stalagmites growing
to fence a sack of frozen biscuits in frost?
There is enormous mystery going on in this house.
How for example is it that as we begin
to leave this city we begin to understand it?
The radio itself will demonstrate remorse:
we begin to discover live music we neglected
to hunt before due to compelling reasons
that are no good now.
Even the tepid air confirms
our lassitude in siestas which are okay,
by which nothing is lost, and lodges
fabulous odors in our nostrils.
We now have everything we need
including sense enough to know how we must
live together as lovers and parents,
as simply and marginally as possible,
because we are of the windswept
and no candle of prosperity
will ever again blister our sunlit difficulties.
